The establishment date of the department is considered to be 1972. Clinical bases are the Educational Scientific Centre for Maternal and Child’s Health Protection of Myrat Garryyev Turkmen State Medical University, S .A. Niyazov Medical Consultative Centre of Turkmenistan,  and 9th and 14th polyclinics of Ashgabat.

The department trains senior students of the Pediatrics and Medical Faculties in the disciplines "Neonatology", "Physiotherapy and Balneology", "Hospital Pediatrics", "Chinese Medicine in Pediatrics". The department is supplied with modern equipment, which allows conducting classes at a high technical level.

The teaching staff of the department has published over 800 works, written over 10 final reports on research projects, received 3 inventors certificates and made over 10 rationalization proposals. The department has prepared the textbook "Children Diseases" for reprinting, developed over 150 teaching aids, created collections of test control of students' knowledge, situational tasks, albums and presentations of lecture material, etc. Testing of students on computers in portals is widely used in the educational process.

Active work is underway in the scientific student group. Research results are represented at the conferences. Every year, scientific works of students are submitted to the competition of young scientists.

Medical and consultative work is carried out in clinical bases. The teachers of the department are the tutors of the departments, participate in medical aviation calls, hold consultations in hospitals. One of the main directions in the development of national science is the introduction of new technologies, and here a special place is given to telemedicine, which since 2019 allows experienced teachers of our university, together with students to conduct remote consultations of severe and / or obscure patients, remote lectures on topical issues of pediatrics and neonatology, as well as clinical and pathological-anatomical analyzes.

The assistants of the department pay great attention to the education of students, being tutors and supervisors of 5th and 6th- year students of the Pediatrics Faculty.
