The establishment date of the department is considered to be 1972. The department is located on the base of the International Traumatology Centre, where medical, as well as educational and methodological work is carried out at the modern level. For many years, well-known scientists of our country headed the department and made a great contribution to the development of science.
Disciplines "Traumatology and Orthopedics" are studied by the students of the Medical and Medical-Prophylactic Faculties; "Practical skills in a hospital" – the students of the Pharmacy; "Faculty Orthopedics" – the students of the Medical Faculty. The department conducts postgraduate training in clinical residency, postgraduate studies, doctoral studies, as well as further training for doctors in the cycles "Arthroplasty", "Actual Issues of Traumatology and Orthopedics".
The staff of the department has published textbooks "Traumatology and Orthopedics", "Military Field Surgery", "Fundamentals of First Aid", "Sports Traumatology", over 100 methodological aids, prepared educational and methodological manuals, compiled questions of test control in all subjects, created videos and interactive tutorials. The International Traumatology Centre has a live video broadcast of operations in the lecture hall, where students observe the stages of surgical interventions.
Scientific research is carried out in the following direсtions: the study of complications of bone fractures with the development of treatment measures; peculiarties of diaphyseal fractures of the femur and the development of perfect methods of treatment; improvement of diagnostics and treatment of deforming arthrosis of the knee joint in the early stages of the disease; pathogenetic aspects of reparative regeneration of bone tissue and methods of correction; prediction and evaluation of outcomes of surgical treatment of osteosynthesis. The method of novocaine blockade for fractures of the lower part of the pelvis and spinal column proposed by the staff of the department, has not yet lost its significance in practical medicine.
Scientific works of the department are published in foreign countries, in the collections of the scientific and practical conferences and periodicals of Turkmenistan. Professors and teachers are actively involved in public events, as well as in organizing programmes promoting a healthy lifestyle on radio and television.
At the department there is a scientific group "Traumatologist", which attracts creative students of the Medical, Pediatrics and Medical-Prophylactic Faculties.
