The department was established in 1932. The educational base of the department has classrooms with modern microscopes, magnifiers, macro- and micropreparations; a laboratory equipped according to modern standards, a biological museum and a herbarium fund.

 

The discipline "Medical Biology and Genetics" is taught at the 1st course of all faculties of the university, "Botany of Medicinal Plants" - at the 1st-2nd courses of the Pharmacy Faculty.

The staff of the department has published two textbooks: "Fundamentals of Medical Genetics", "Botany of Medicinal Plants", as well as "Atlas of Medical Protozoology" and over 60 methodological manuals. Lecture material is presented in the form of multimedia presentations, as well as in electronic form. Practical classes are held with specialized groups in English.

 

Research work consists in studying the bioecological features of Badhyz ephemeroids and their economic significance; immunobioecological properties of preparations from mulberry leaves and silkworm waste; influence of β-carotenes of nutmeg pumpkin on the secretion of cytokines in adolescents.

The results of the research work of the department are published in the periodicals of Turkmenistan and in foreign collections of the scientific and practical conferences. The workers of the department regularly appear in the media on various topics of medical biology and medicinal plants of Turkmenistan.

 

Members of the scientific student group trained by the teachers of the department, won prizes in the Biology Olympiads held among the universities of Turkmenistan.
