The department was established on the basis of the radiology course in 1938;, its clinical base is currently the Oncology Scientific Clinical Centre where lectures and practical classes are conducted.
Medical Radiology and Radiology, Issues of Ultrasound Diagnostics, Clinical Rradiology, General and Particular Oncology are studied by the students of all faculties of the university. The lectures use multimedia technologies At practical lessons, students study modern methods of X-ray diagnostics, ultrasound diagnostics, computed tomography, magnetic nuclear resonance imaging, angiography, etc. Senior students study methods of diagnosing and treating patients, independently and with the help of teachers participate in the examination of patients, write a medical history, discuss the results of the examination and treatment.
The department trains clinical residents and graduate students in the specialties: "radiology", "oncosurgery", "oncology", as well as cycle classes for postgraduate training of oncologists and radiologists.
At the clinical base of the department, radiation methods of research (X-ray, ultrasound, computed tomography, nuclear magnetic resonance, etc.) of the chest, abdominal cavity, gastrointestinal tract, urinary and biliary systems are used. Oncosurgeons of the department perform surgical, combined and complex treatment of malignant tumors; plastic and reconstructive surgery for cancer of the colon, stomach, breast, bone tumors.
The staff of the department has published textbooks on oncology and radiology in the Turkmen language, and their reprint is being prepared. Methodological manuals for students have been developed, multimedia presentations of lecture material have been created. The main educational and methodological materials are presented in electronic form for the medical library of the university.
The main directions of research activity of the department are the following: results of diagnostics and methods of treatment of tumors of bones and soft tissues; features of the treatment of locally advanced forms of malignant neoplasms of the rectum; study of prognostic factors for skin melanoma; comparative evaluation of various radiation methods for diagnosing osteoarthritis, juvenile, reactive and rheumatoid arthritis; ways to improve the diagnosis and treatment of disseminated forms of colorectal cancer; improvement of diagnostic methods and treatment of patients with soft tissue sarcoma.
3 doctoral and 8 candidate theses have been defended at the department, over 600 scientific articles and 5 monographs have been published, patents for 5 inventions have been received, over 90 rationalization proposals have been developed.
