The Languages Department was established in 1944.
The department provides training in the following disciplines: "Fundamentals of Medical Terminology", "Turkmen Language and Culture of Speech", English, Russian, German and Chinese languages.
Since the adoption of the "Concept for improving teaching of foreign languages in Turkmenistan", a purposeful work is being carried out to implement it. To enrich the vocabulary, improve the knowledge of foreign languages, perfect and develop the culture of students' speech, the department has classrooms supplied with modern language and interactive equipment.
The subject "Fundamentals of Medical Terminology" consists of the sections: anatomical, pharmaceutical and clinical terminology.
At the lessons on the subject "Turkmen Language and Culture of Speech ", 1st- year students of all faculties gradually master their practical skills of the speech culture of their native language. English at the department is taught for the students of all faculties. The subject "Russian Language" is taught for the students of the1st-2nd- year of all faculties. The German Language is taught to graduate students of all faculties. At the lessons, students learn general lexical material, study the peculiarities of the grammar of the German language and enrich their vocabulary.
The Chinese Language is taught to the 2nd-3rd-year students of the Medical Faculty of the specialty "Rehabilitation and non-traditional medicine". At the lessons students learn the fundamentals of the Chinese grammar, writing peculiarities, and study the names and medicinal properties of the medicinal plants growing in China and Turkmenistan.
The scientific topics of the department are devoted to the study of lexical and stylistic norms of the Turkmen literary language, the study of the vocabulary of the bilingual medical dictionaries, etc.
On the base of the Languages Department, 8 candidate theses were defended, 6 monographs and over 100 scientific papers were published on the methodology of teaching languages and the professional orientation of education, 45 methodological manuals were developed, textbooks were published in the following disciplines: "Medical Documentation", "Fundamentals of Medical Terminology", " English”, and the “Turkmen-English-Russian Medical Dictionary-Phrasebook”, “Turkmen-English-Russian Medical Dictionary” were published.
Mini-dialogues, electronic recordings of texts in English, Russian, German and Chinese are being developed at the department for the students of all faculties. Using the possibilities of telecommunications, the workers regularly participate in interuniversity educational and methodological conferences. Medical students take an active part in interuniversity state subject Olympiads in taught languages, as well as essay writing competitions that contribute to in-depth immersion of students in the study of disciplines, mastering practical skills and, and as a result, the formation and training of highly qualified specialists with knowledge of foreign languages.
At the department there is a circle "Language is the world", where students improve their speaking skills in English, Russian, German and Chinese.
The teachers of the department pay great attention to the tutorial work. Within the framework of the university and beyond, teachers attract students to the participation in the scientific and practical conferences and poetry competitions dedicated to significant dates.
The department organises English, German and Russian languages courses.
